Concept fact sheet #4: Family life in the global village

Using IPTV to stay in touch and strengthen family ties in the global village and cultivate social networking instead of isolation: That is the concept of 3frogs.

Everyone comes together at the campfire of the modern day, the living room television. A family calendar shows who is where today, giving news of the family and telling what’s new. The flowers in the garden bloom on distant monitors, and grandchildren crawl by video practically onto grandma’s lap. The family, spread out over Germany, Europe or the world, is all together at home. Whenever the family members want, and wherever they happen to be. The family network goes global.

Concept fact sheet #4: Family life in the global village

The family, spread out over Germany, Europe or the world, is all together at home. Whenever the family members want, and wherever they happen to be. The family network goes global.

Concretely: The entire family can access the calendar, photo albums, videos and news over the TV, Internet and mobile end user devices. Zapping comfortably from the sofa, users access a start screen through a simple menu navigation. Here one glance gives them a clear, up-to-date overview of all the features. Contents are generated and uploaded over the Internet and or mobile, consumed at the computer, on the television or a mobile end user device.

    Also insgesamt Schnappsidee.
    Innovativ - keine Spur.
    Langweilig wird’s…..

    Grüße
    Rolf

    Dear Mr. Hemmerling,

We think that innovation should be simple by using the existing trends and available technology.
Besides using the power of IPTV to watch everyone’s own preferred show, movie or match, with the concept of FamilienFun there will be an easy way to connect and to keep in touch with all user types and ages within families.

In the old days warmed by telling stories around the campfire, today by sharing emotions through IPTV!

Maybe we will meet someday so we could really debate, but with only text messages we agree this will boring……………

    With kind regards,

    Robert Janssen

For me this is the most promising concept I see among the contestants.
It seems both down to earth and still adding a great value to the use of the TV. It has to be admitted that it is not really that innovative. But I didn’t see any really innovative concept here. This might be a result of the Mediaroom platform being somewhat limited.
To Mr. Hemmerlings critique I have to say, that it somehow misses the point. It’s not mainly about one family living in one house. It’s about families living scattered around the country. (I don’t say world as this concept might only work inside one telekom provider).

On the other side I find the campfire metapher a little to lofty. And why limiting it to the family and not extending it to one’s “social network” - unless you say this concept makes the whole world a big family! (lofty, you see?)

All the best for the next round!

I don’t quite see where this concept interacts with the TV signal. I thought the idea of this award was to invent interactive TV applications, as the name tells?

But this concept appears to be yet another social networking service, with a client running on an IPTV receiver slapped on to it. You might as well only implement a frontend for Facebook or Myspace…

IMHO, people who want to use such services will prefer to use their PC for it. And those who don’t want to use a PC won’t have any IPTV service in the first place. So where is the target group for this project?

Yes, you could say the innovation with this concept is not very high, but that’s just our point! We want to create an new dimension to IPTV with a low use and acceptance level. Besides this the possibilities on IPTV are limited at this moment.
However by creating environment based on this concept people will use IPTV more and more. Of course in a similar way as they could do on the Internet, BUT with the big difference they can share and enjoy together leaning back on the couch.
The interaction is limited within the first stage, but by creating a large mass and adding more functionality the possibilities are unlimited for interaction, services and business opportunities!

Despite the fact that people who have IPTV will have an internet connection, people will use the IPTV version for enjoying just because of easier access and they can ‘lean back’ together.

I was on the CEBIT 2008 developer meeting of this competition - and where where you ? -, and we were there officially *warned* by the TELEKOM developers about the problem and the necessity of “context switching” - so if the family’s daughter uses the IPTV device, she does not want to share their settings and the information of her command and contents history with her parents.
So its necessary to detect when a different person uses the device, by clever means.

From this point of view, the idea that several people share the same device and use a common context (and so user settings, special user informations, command and contents history visible to anybody), is .. boring.

One well-known success principle of new technologies is

EITHER to change the use cases (and user interface)
    OR to change the technology
but NOT both things at the same time.

So if there is a wish since 40 years, that any family member wants his/her own TV set program selection, radio and CD player selection what station and CD is played, why do you try to argue against this, and want to force to sit at a “camp fire”, what they don´t do so since 40 years ?

The ONLY reason for a TV camp fire experience in the first 20 years was the cost of the device, plus the room situation. Since the early 1970th, coming with the tendency to have more than one TV set in a flat, the campfire is DEAD.

I live single, don´t have a girlfriend, almost never shared TV with my parents since the age of 12. I remember I was surprised about the movie “While You Were Sleeping” ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114924/ ), that in relations there is a fight who controls the “remote control”, so what TV program is selected, and what to do in advertising breaks ( switching to another channel or not, sound off,… ?).

So please developers of 3Frogs, have a try and look “While you were sleeping” to understand why your concept is rubbish.

PS: Sandra Bullock is great !

    Sincerely
    Rolf
